John retired from the United States Navy in 1979 serving in the Vietnam Conflict with a rank of QMC (SS), he was also a retired Insurance Agent from John Hancock.  John enjoyed attending any and all veterans events/activities and family sporting events, making his weekly visits to the VFW/American legion.  He also loved sitting on his back porch reading, and listening to music.  John took trips, near and far, he was known to tell jokes he picked up from his time in the service, along with submarine stories.
