Barbara Janet Scallin, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of East Lansing, Michigan, passed away at her home on February 5, 2009. She had battled a neurological disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, for many years, always keeping her sense of humor and wit. Barb was born on December 28th, 1925, one of twins (Clayton Bristow) to Elizabeth and Clarence Bristow, in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from Central High in Sioux City, and received her B.S. degree in zoology from the University of South Dakota in 1948. She met her husband, Dr. James Scallin while attending the University of South Dakota; they were married in 1948. They moved to East Lansing, Michigan in 1956. Mrs. Scallin was active in her community. She was a 60+ year member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority; Ingham County Medical Auxiliary; Sparrow Medical Center Auxiliary; volunteer at the East Lansing Public Library, and Ingham Medical Center Chi Medical Library. Mrs. Scallin was employed at Michigan State University for 20 years as an Academic Advisor. She was a member of the Peoples Church in East Lansing. She enjoyed bridge, gardening, and boating with her husband. She instilled a love of flowers and gardening in her daughters. Her grandchildren Liz and James were special lights of her life. Survivors include daughter Kathy Bronson (Peter), granddaughter Liz Bronson, and grandson James Bronson, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; brother Clayt Bristow (Lyla) of Davenport, Iowa; nieces Becki Youngmeyer (Harley) of Mason, Ohio, Sue Stone (Will) of the Villages, Florida, nephew Bob Bristow (Rhonda) of Bettendorf, Iowa, and many friends. She was preceded in death by husband James, daughters Susan and Patricia, and her parents. A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Scallin at The Peoples Church of East Lansing, Michigan, on Saturday, March 21st, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be Reverends Penny Swartz, and Sally Nolen. There will be a reception afterward at the church. Private burial services will be held at Leek Cemetery, Alaiedon Twp, Michigan.
