Bernard Pennington

Retired Msgt Bernard Pennington, age 71, passed away in the accompaniment of family and a priest in the comfort of his home on September 3, 2023. He was born to Robert and Elizabeth Pennington in Chicago, Illinois, on March 9, 1952. He was baptized Luthern at the age of 11. In 1970, he graduated as an all-state chess champion from Short Ridge High School in Indianapolis, Indiana.

With unequivocal knowledge, he retired after serving twenty-one years as a Nuclear Weapons Technician and Instructor in the United States Air Force. He was also a three-time military chess champion. He served at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona; Clark Air Force Base, Philippines; Carswell Air Force Base, Texas; and Lowry Air Force Base, Colorado.

Bernard retired again after twenty years from the United States Postal Service and after continued working with his son, Bernard Jr. “Webster.”

With his love for chess and love for God, he used his God-given gift of teaching and leadership for his children, adolescents in Catholic Confirmation, Youth Groups, and anyone who would listen.

He leaves behind to mourn his wife, Veronica Pennington; his three daughters, Yvette Pierce (Darrell), Catrice “Tanisha” Robinson, Chanae’ Pennington; two sons, Bernard Jr. “Webster” Pennington, Edward Pennington; six siblings, Rosemary Wright (James), LaVerne Pennington, Robert H. Pennington (Amanda), Sherre Pennington Calhoun, Valesia Pennington Rogers; ten grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Elizabeth Pennington, and brothers Reggie Hines and Kevin Pennington Black (Kena - living).

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Megie Funeral Home located at 104 Spice Street, Mt. Orab, Ohio 45154. Family and friends will be welcomed for a memorial visitation beginning at 12:00 pm until the time of service. Pastor Tim Carter officiating.
