Following a courageous battle with lung cancer, Charles Kendall Moore, age 81, went home to be with the Lord on June 9, 2017. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Beverly (Bridges) Moore; his daughter, Becky (Moore) Mitchell and husband, Kevin Mitchell; five grandchildren, Kristina (Mitchell) Bowden, Kaylee (Mitchell) Back, Sierra Mitchell, Deanna Mitchell and Kevin P.S. Mitchell; two great-granddaughters, one niece, Bonita Haas; and a multitude of friends and other family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Kendall Moore; his sister, Patricia Ann Moore and his mother, Esther Gertrude Young.
Charles, also known as Kenny or Charlie, was born and raised in Decatur, Ohio. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1954. His favorite teacher was Mr. Fred Baird, who taught history. Although he had attended church from his youth, he recalled as a young teenage boy going out to the field, looking up into the sky and thinking, "there has got to be more to life than this." After high school, he began working in the Paint Department at General Motors, sanding and paper hanging. He would often listen to sermons by Pastor John Rawlings. One evening, while listening to the radio, he learned of a revival service that Pastor Rawlings was holding in a little store front church in Sardinia, Ohio. That Tuesday, in June of 1960, at the age of 24, he attended one of those services and received Christ as his personal Savior. He began attending the church in Sardinia, also attending Decatur Presbyterian where his mother played the organ. For those who knew Charlie, it's hard to believe he was so reserved that initially, he was known to leave a few minutes before the close of the service to avoid being called up to pray. He soon became an active member of SBBC - where he served as youth leader, Sunday school teacher, and church bus driver. He was also known to enjoy cleaning the building and could be found on the heels of Pastor Jess Dailey in most of his spare time. At the age of 31, he took a LOA from GM and went to Springfield, Missouri to attend Baptist Bible College for pastoral ministries, where he met his wife Beverly Bridges, of Chicago, Illinois. Originally, he planned to return to work at GM and start a church in Chillicothe, Ohio. When he graduated from BBC that Thursday evening in May, he was married the next day, and returned to his home church that weekend to preach his first sermon as pastor of SBBC. He pastored there from 1970-2000. He retired briefly, but with his heart still in ministry, began the Bible Baptist Church of Russellville, Ohio in May of 2004 where he continued in ministry until his home going.
Charlie loved his family, his country , his church and his God. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1960-1964. He enjoyed vacationing in the Smoky Mountains, watching major league baseball and college basketball. He was especially fond of the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago White Sox, and the Xavier Musketeers. He served multiple times as a Bike-A-Thon Coordinator for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital raising several thousand dollars. He will be remembered most for his investment into the lives of others. His teaching, preaching, caring, and sharing of the gospel will live on in the lives of those that he touched. Many remember him as the "Church Bus Man" and will never forget his weekly visits to their homes, with his bubble gum and coloring contest pictures, and the blue and gold church bus he drove each Sunday morning to bring them to church. He will be missed dearly.
