Clarolene 'Sue' Conroy

Clarolene "Sue" Carothers Conroy was born in Fort Mill, South Carolina, April 30, 1919 to a family of educators. Extraordinarily bright, she graduated Valedictorian of her high school at age 14. Too young to attend college, she worked at a drug store/soda fountain shop, where a three dip cone was just five cents. While working and helping the Pharmacist, she discovered she wanted to pursue medicine as a career. She graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, in 1940. She continued her graduate studies in mental health and communicable diseases at Sydenham Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She worked for years at the old St. Francis Hospital in Cincinnati. She set the foundation for her family with good principles, a deep relationship with God, the importance of virtuous manners, the strength of generosity, and the enduring belief in family. Clarolene "Sue" Conroy passed away peacefully, February 19, 2009 at the age of 89, after a short illness, surrounded by her family. Not long before her passing, she was asked what was her purpose in life. She said it was to teach the gift of gratitude. Loving wife to her late husband, Federal Judge Thomas A. Conroy, Sr., patient mother of five children; the late Suzanne (Bill) Gregg, Thomas Conroy Jr., Patricia Conroy, Judith (Steve) Cox and James (Melba) Conroy. She was the proud grandmother of Bill (Renee) Gregg, Linda Gregg, Robin, Stephanie, and Danny Cox, Tiffany and James Conroy and loving great grandmother of Christopher (Christy) and Tabitha Gregg, and Brittany and Jacob Barhorst. Her legacy of graciousness lives on, through her family and others she has touched. Memorials may be directed to charity of choice.
