David J. Stephen passed away suddenly on August 24, 2018 at the age of 68. He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Julia (née Cole), daughter Judith, son Gregory, siblings Jeff (Jane), Jim, Nicki (Dennis), Larry (Jeanne), Betsy (Bruce), parents-in-law Leland M. and Carol C. Cole, sisters-in-law Nina (Mike), Ellen (Don), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Babs Stephen.
Dave's life long passion was music. Born December 16, 1949 in Ontonagon, Michigan, he began his music studies playing cornet before switching to trumpet as an undergraduate at Indiana University. He earned degrees in trumpet performance from Indiana University and Boston University, as well as an MBA from Avila College in Kansas City, Missouri. He played trumpet in the United States Coast Guard Band and was principal trumpet in the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Later he was the trumpet professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and performed extensively as both a classical and jazz musician in the Kansas City area. After moving to Cincinnati, he worked at the University of Cincinnati, most recently as the Assistant Director of Sponsored Research Accounting.
A memorial service will be held October 6, 2018 at 4pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park, Ohio.
