Betty Joan Cronin Alloway passed away peacefully on February 5, 2016. Betty was born in Sylvania, Ohio to Bertha Belle Cronin (nee Arnold) and Joseph Francis Cronin on August 4, 1926. She lived in Sylvania, Ohio, Litchfield, Illinois, and Edwardsville, Illinois along with her older brother, Joseph Frances Cronin, and older sister, Mary Margaret Todt (nee Cronin). She graduated from St. Johns Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri with her RN Certificate in 1947. She met her future husband, Rawle Allison Alloway Jr., while she was working in a blood donation center, and he had come in to donate blood. Betty and Rawle were married April 22, 1950 in the St Louis Cathedral, St Louis, Missouri. Betty and Rawle raised four children. Debbie Longbons, Chibby Alloway, Meg Patton, and Jeff Alloway, while living in St. Louis, Missouri, Mentor, Ohio, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Her children have many fond memories of these years, in particular clam bakes in the back yard, early morning Christmas celebrations, and a family vacation with a tow behind popup camper along the New England coastline. Betty and Rawle emphasized the importance of education and were both very proud that they had been able to ensure that all of their children were able to attend and graduate from college. Betty loved her occupation as a school nurse, which began in earnest after her children were older. She worked as a school nurse for many years while living in the Cincinnati area. She worked at the Bethany School in Glendale, the Blue Ash School District and Sycamore School District. She enjoyed her pets over the years, including Whiskers, Charlie, Daisy, Josh, and the adopted Patton dogs. She enjoyed walks in the Cincinnati Nature Center, quiet days reading and reflecting while in sitting in her living room, and her life long independence. Betty was preceded in death by her mother, father, sister, brother, and Rawle Alloway. She is survived by her children: Debbie and Tom Longbons, Chibby and Susanne Alloway, Meg and Randy Patton, and Jeff and Bernadette Alloway; 10 grandchildren Rosanna (Mark) Jackson, Claire Alloway, Michael (Diane) Longbons, Carolyn (Nicholas) Jackson, Tyler (Kendra) Patton, Mollie Patton, Elizabeth Alloway ( Nathan Cox), Michael, Alloway, Brian Alloway, and Mark Alloway: and 8 great grandchildren Zachary, Kaiden, A.J. Longbons, Preston, Jamison, and Kashton Jackson, and Allie and Will Jackson. Her family is comforted by the knowledge that she had a long and active life, where she provided much love and support to her family and friends and was, in return, blessed with the same love and support in return. Her family will not grieve for her passing, but will deeply miss her reassuring presence and will be comforted by their own personal fond memories. Calling hours will be Tuesday 5-8 at Craver-Riggs Funeral Home and Crematory in Milford, OH. Funeral services will be held at Christ Church Glendale Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Oakhill Cemetery in Glendale. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Christ Church Glendale or the Cincinnati Chapter of the SPCA.
