Chief Petty Officer (Hull Technician) George D. “Andy” Anderson Jr US Navy

Final Call to Duty 6 April 2023
Chief Andy was born in Springfield, Ohio on 26 September1936 to George D.
and Francis M. Anderson. In 1958 Chief Andy married the love of his life,
Janice (Balzhiser) Anderson. From their union they have two sons, George
D. (Michelle) Anderson III and Dene M (Terry) Anderson.
Chief Andy joined the United States Navy in 1953 with twenty years of
active duty and ten years of inactive reserve. During his tenure in the
Navy, Chief Andy obtained multiple accommodations including 5 Good Conduct
medals, 2 National Defense Service Medals, 7 Sea Service Deployment
Ribbons, 2 Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, 4 Vietnam Service Medals one
with the Marine Corps, a Meritorious Service Meal, the Navy E Ribbon, the
Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Occupation
Service Medal EUROPE, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 device,
the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, the Republic of
Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation award, and the Cold War Victory medal..
While station in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, Chief Andy was the Scout Master for
the Boy Scouts of America. Chief Andy was a true American Hero.
Education was very important to the Chief and after his retirement from the
Navy he continued his own education at the University of Cincinnati where
he obtained a Masters Degree in Education. He then taught Welding and
Fabrication, Blueprint Reading, and Mathematics at the Great Oaks Career
Campuses. After his teaching career, Chief Andy went to work as a
supervisor for Perfections Services. He became the first person to retire
from the Cincinnati based company.
Chief Andy was a very creative man. He loved to write books and stories
about his career in the Navy. With help and support from Janice, Chief Andy
became of self-published author of several books including his most prized
being “The Other Side of a Sailor”. On any given day you would find him in
his welding shop working on commissioned ironwork projects. He also enjoyed
spending time with his friends and comrades at the Dennis Johnson VFW Post
6562 in Milford, Ohio. Chief Andy proudly served as the Commander of the
post for many years.
When Chief Andy was not serving his country or teaching, he loved spending
time with his family. It was not unusual to find him and Janice working in
the garden and canning vegetables. He mastered the art of bread making and
desert making to satisfy his very sweet tooth. His most recent passion
has been making Jams and Jellies for his granddaughter, Christina’s, store.
His favorite pass times were spending time with his loved ones, relaxing by
the lake and watching the birds. You would also find his enjoying
beekeeping and watching TV with the volume turned up LOUD.
Chief Andy Anderson passed away in the loving arms of his soul mate, Janice
on 6 April 2023 at his home in Goshen, Ohio who survives him. He is also
survived by his sons George D (Michelle) and Dene (Terry) Anderson. His
grandchildren: Christina M. Anderson, Tanya L. Anderson, Heather R. (Jeremy)
Watson, Johnny Troher, Kerry Ware, and Kelly Easter. Great Grandchildren:
Karice G. (Sabbath) Gaskins, Dallas C. Smith, Evelynn G. Penley, Sydney M.
Anderson, Ruel D. Anderson and Great Great Granddaughter Ariayah S.
Gaskins. His brother Steve (Martha) Heil, and sister Darlene Berte along with
several nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and dear friends. He is
preceded in death by his parents and brother, Billy Anderson.
Chief George D. (Andy) Anderson was a wonderful man that who loved his
family and friends. He enjoyed teaching and being a leader along with being
a source of inspiration to all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be on Wednesday 12 April 2023 from 10:00am until service
time at 12:00pm at the Megie Funeral Home, 529 Main Street, Milford, Ohio.
Committal Service will follow immediately at Graceland Memorial Gardens,
Milford, Ohio with military honors being given.
