Joseph D. Coleman

Coleman, Joseph D., 67, Clifton resident, passed away Dec. 18, 2006. J.D. was an Associate Professor of Construction Science at the University of Cincinnati, College of Applied Science. He is preceded in death by his father Paul Coleman. Surviving are his wife Feay (nee Shellman); mother, Frances Stockstill How of Picayune, Mississippi; his step-mother Helen Coleman of Albany, NY; four daughters Lisa Anne Fleming (Bob) of Pittsburgh, PA; Laura Frances Coleman, Pittsburgh, PA; Anna Elizabeth Offman (Brad), Fairfax, VA; and Weslie Selena Coleman, Cincinnati; three grandchildren, Ryan Alexander Fleming, Caroline Nicole Fleming, and Bradley Owen Offman; two half brothers Carl How (Sue) of Picayune, Mississippi and Patrick Coleman (Diane) of Albany, New York; two half-sisters Susan Brizzell (Charlie) of Melrose, NY and Bridget Brizzell (Dave) of Albany, NY. A family service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 27 at Saint Agatha Church, 212 Station Street, Bridgeville, Pa. Memorials to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati 45242. Born in Sarasota, FL, JD accompanied his family to Honolulu, Hawaii where they lived for several years in the 1940s and 1950s. Perhaps this early experience accounts for his sense of adventure and lifelong love of the sea and sailing. He completed high school in Picayune, Mississippi and graduated from the University of Mississippi with a B.A. in English and History. He served in Vietnam as an officer of the United States Navy. He earned an architectural degree from Tulane University. After a career in architecture, he returned to the University of South Florida for a Masters Degree in History and to the University of Florida for a Ph.D. in Architecture and Planning. From 2000 until his death, JD was a professor at the University of Cincinnati. A true citizen of the world, he especially enjoyed sharing his love of buildings and international travel with students who accompanied him to Spain, Australia, Belgium, and China. JD will be remembered for his tremendous intellect, acerbic wit, ready laugh, and generous heart. And he will be greatly missed by his colleagues, friends, and loving family.
