BYRNE, Martha S. (Christie), passed away May 5, 2008, following a personal battle with cancer. Martha was born August 30, 1941 in Ludington, Michigan. She had a lifetime of adventure in her short 66 years having lived in Colorado, Italy, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Michigan. Martha devoted most of her adult life to rearing her two sons in Carmel, Indiana, and teaching art at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis where she recently retired. Her career as a teacher was marked by numerous accolades and accomplishments including teaching engagements in Japan and New Zealand. Other interests included painting, sculpture, reading, travel, and spending time with family. Martha is survived by her sons, Eric Byrne and wife, Jennifer of Kansas; Flannigan Byrne, wife, Bonnie and grandsons Jonathan and Braeden of Ohio; brothers, Jason Christie, and David Christie; sisters, Carol Kolb and Beth Christie; mother, Hazel Christie. Informal fellowship and celebration of Martha's life will be held Saturday, May 31st, 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm, at Woodland Country Club, in Carmel, IN. Formal interment in Ludington, Michigan will be announced for family later this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family has established the Martha Byrne Memorial Fund via the Lawrence Township School Foundation in hopes of establishing a scholarship in her honor.
