Robert D. “Bob” Johnson, 97, a long-time resident of Madeira, died at Bethesda North Hospital on November 10, 2022 due to complications of pneumonia. Born in Portsmouth, Ohio to Leroy Glenn and Neva Duff Johnson, he attended high school in Athens. Bob attended both Ohio University (BS Mathematics) and the University of Colorado (BS Aeronautical Engineering) where he met Doris Eileen Hull who he married in 1949. There were married for 65 years. Bob served his country during WWII as part of the Army Air Forces and earned his Navigator wings flying B-24 and B-25 bombers.
Bob began working for General Electric’s Aircraft engine program in 1950. After assignments in Boston and Seattle, he returned to Cincinnati in 1963 and worked in the Evendale plant until his retirement in 1990 as an Applications Engineer.
While at Ohio University, Bob played basketball and was recently recognized as the oldest living basketball alumni where he was known as “Ironman”. Bob was an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster and Adult Leader of Boy Scout Troop 616, an avid senior runner until his mid-70s and tennis player until his early 90s. He was a dearly loved member of St. Paul Community United Methodist Church where he served as an usher.
He was predeceased by his wife Doris (nee Hull), brothers Bill and Rick, and sisters Kay and Mary. He is survived by his sons Steve and Scott (Candi) and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10th at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul Community United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions are welcome and can be made to the St. Paul Community United Methodist Church memorial fund at 8221 Miami Avenue, Madeira, Ohio 45243.
