Thomas “Rudi” Stafford Hodges, a beloved father, son, brother and friend to many, transitioned to Heaven. Tom is remembered for his compassion and so much more.
Tom was born February 8, 1966, in Terrace Park, Ohio. The rambunctious, high-energy child could be found catapulting onto a bed or jumping over 12 trash cans on his bicycle. He balanced his playful spirit with his drive. When Tom set out to be his best, he was willing to put in the work to make that possible. This was reflected in both his studies and his basketball career.
As Tom got older, he became what his sister described as a “Renaissance Man.” He took a deep interest in the arts, history, nonfiction books, fine wine and cigars. He loved the finer things in life, but if something wasn’t “fine” he wasn’t bothered. He could find enjoyment and fun anytime and anywhere. And that was a trait he carried with him throughout his full 60 years of life, according to his family. “He was the life of the party,” his sister said.
As a father, Tom made his children feel heard. His daughter, Bebe, counted on her dad when she felt sad or needed a comforting hug. His son, Jack, said that Tom wouldn’t judge others for whatever they needed help with. Tom allowed the people around him to be themselves. And that makes sense, his family said, given that he was always his authentic self. He wasn’t going to feel embarrassed (even if that meant his oldest daughter, Victoria, sometimes was.)
Tom’s family recalled his “heart of gold.” He cared deeply about those around him, putting other people’s needs before his own and making others feel so special in the process.
Tom is survived by his mother, Margaret “Googoo” Hodges; his brother John Hodges (Barb) and his sister Lynn Hodges Almas (Dean); his three children, Victoria, Jack and Bebe Hodges; and his dog Perseus. He is also survived by Lauren Thaman, his many nieces and nephews, countless friends and his children’s friends, all of whom loved him so much.
He joins in Heaven his father, John “Buzz” Hodges, Uncle Ralph Bastin, Aunt Alene Bastin and Uncle Dan Smith.
A visitation will take place on Friday, April 24, from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at Megie Funeral Home in Milford. A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Terrace Park. A reception will immediately follow.
