History

Service and Stability Since 1900

Since 1900, the funeral home has been located at 104 Spice Street and is a landmark in Mt. Orab. The first recorded funeral was for the burial of Andrew Walliss' mother for $50. In 1900, Ed Thompson bought the funeral business from Mr. Riding. Ed had two sons, Ralph, who passed away in his twenties, and Clair. In 1922, Clair graduated from the Cincinnati College of Embalming.

After Ed's death in 1939, Clair took over the business and operated it for over thirty years. He was very involved in the community: he was a charter member of the Mt. Orab Lions Club, a member of the Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Mt. Orab M.E. Church, where his father was once the treasurer.

After Clair retired, the funeral home changed owners a few times before Tom Megie purchased it in 2006. Tom has been in the funeral business for over 26 years. Tom hopes to keep the history of this fine old funeral home alive, much like others that have worked at this funeral home, including Arthur Brooks, Jack Scrofe, Posey Malott, Walter Stratton, and Richard Kuhlwein. The old photo of Clair Thompson standing by his horse-drawn carriage continues to hang in the funeral home in his honor.

Tom and our staff are bringing back the charm and character that has always been a part of this funeral home. By planting many flowers and adding new bushes, we have enhanced the landscape and created a welcoming, colorful environment. A gazebo, clock, and new sidewalks have been added as well.

With the passing of each day, Tom and the staff of Megie Funeral Home continue to provide the same excellent service begun by the Thompson family. We will assist you and your family with the dignity, respect, and honesty that you deserve at a price that you can afford. After serving over 5000 families since 1900, Megie Funeral Home continues to meet the unique and individual needs of the families we serve.

We're very interested in hearing from anyone that has additional history of the funeral home. We would like to write a history book on the funeral home, so please contact us if you have any stories or photos to share. We also welcome you to stop by and see the changes we have made. We're here for you!

Megie Funeral Home & Crematory - Craver Chapel History

From 1833 – 1870, a one-room brick town school with two teachers had occupied lot #7, near the Methodist Church on Main St in Milford. However, in 1870, Mr. D.K. Harvey built a lovely large home on this site in the Gatch subdivision. In 1913, Charles T. Johnson purchased the property and residence to rebuild his funeral home after a flood had destroyed his previous place of business.

Fifteen years later, John C. Craver became Mr. Johnson’s assistant and eventually purchased the business and property from him in 1936. John had married Sue Woodward in 1934, and they lived in the home, raising their three daughters, until 1973. Donald and Emily Hookum, Mr. Craver’s son-in-law and daughter, joined him in the business and eventually purchased it from him in 1966. In 1975, construction of a 110-seat chapel was completed, offering families additional choice and convenience.

In 1994, Mr. and Mrs. Hookum sold the business and property to the Riggs family. Although retired, Mr. Craver rejoined the firm as a board member in 1994 and continued in that capacity until his death in 1999. To honor Mr. Craver, this chapel continues to carry his name today.

Responding to the ever-increasing demand for cremation services, an on-site crematory was installed in December 1999. In August 2000, a separate “pet only” crematory was installed, which allows us to provide pet cremation services to the general public as well as many of the veterinary clinics in the greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region.

In February 2021, the Riggs family sold the businesses and property to Tom and Stacy Megie, and Craver-Riggs Funeral Home & Crematory became Megie Funeral Home & Crematory.

A landmark for the residents of Milford for over 100 years, Megie Funeral Home & Crematory - Craver Chapel continues to serve as a leader in responding to the unique and individual needs of the families we serve.
